GROUP EXERCISE FUN: Katie, Group Exercise Coordinator (805) 466-6775

Whether you’ve spent your entire life around a health club or just beginning your fitness journey, you’re sure to find a class that suits your needs. KCF-Atascadero offers over 70 group exercise classes each week included in your membership. What other ‘gym’ or ‘studio’ can offer you that along with amazing, certified and motivating instructors?  See the latest Group Exercise Class Schedule and descriptions here.

For a solid start to any class, plan to arrive 5-10 minutes before class and introduce yourself to the instructor. The instructor will help you with any set-up and give you a roadmap of the class format. Instructors will give you less (or more) intense options according to your needs. Look for the ‘Smart Start’ symbol on the class schedule for those classes that are a… ‘smart start’.

Pop Up Classes and ‘Launches’ are a great way to keep you motivated and your body changing.  ‘Pop-Ups’ are special classes not usually on the schedule.  ‘Launches’ are when a specific class format changes music and moves to keep your workouts fresh.  Check out what’s offered this month:

RIDE for a Cause: Saturday, February 16th at 8a. Brad and Victor will be leading us on a 75- minute RIDE Cycling Class to raise money for our local Cancer Support Community. Meet us in the Cycling Studio with a suggested (and much appreciated) donation of $10 per rider. Please be sure reserve 24 hours in advance.

For those classes that are limited by space or equipment, make your reservations a day in advance online or by calling the Front Desk. If you are not able to make the class it’s important to cancel so allow your spot to be available for another member.

What’s the proper use for a cell phone during class? Unplug and disconnect. It’s not easy for all of us to carve out time for ourselves and be distraction free. Please honor the needs of those around you and the instructor’s need to focus on giving a great class. Unplug and disconnect during class.

What are those large flat screens throughout the Club used for? Track your workouts with MyZone. MyZone is a heart-rate monitor that tracks your effort and involves you in the MyZone Club community. It’s a great tool to keep you motivated, determined, and inspired. This month you can save $50 OFF the regular $149 price.  Learn more about MyZone here.  Make your time in the Club work for you by tracking your workouts

Aqua Fitness Classes are still going strong through the chilly winter season.  Working out in the water gives you results while being kind to your joints.  See the latest class times here, and remember, your Atascadero Club offers aqua classes indoor, and outdoor, all year-round.

Working out is only half the equation to being healthy, a balanced diet is as important. If you want to change your eating habits or get back on track after the holidays, our nutritionists, John Hornbuckle and Emily Wicklund, are now accepting new nutrition clients. Contact Janey, Fitness Director, at slofitness@kennedyclubs.com to set up an appointment today.

A Tip from John Hornbuckle, Nutritionist: Drink More Water. Why is Adequate Hydration so important?

Your body does not have a water reservoir for storage, therefor it is important to replace fluids every day consistently.

It is essential for Digestion, Absorption, and Removal of waste products.

Helps transport nutrients and other body substances.

Regulates body temperature.

Prevents dehydration.

Increases metabolic rate.

What happens when you don’t drink enough water? You can experience…

Decreased strength, endurance, muscle volume and fullness

Muscle cramping

Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death

The current baseline for the average human body is 1 gallon (128oz) of water a day. There are many factors that impact this baseline such as: Caffeine intake, activity levels, and current health conditions. In almost all cases this will result in a higher baseline of daily water intake. It is also important to note that increased hydration levels mean you need adequate sodium intake as well. (Roughly 1.5 tsp of sea salt per 1 gallon of water each day)

KIDZ CLUB: Genevieve, Kidz Club Director (805) 781-3488 ext. 20.

If you are new to the club and bringing your child(ren) for the first time, please come 10-15 minutes early so you have time to sign your child’s waiver, get your Kidz Club hours, and make sure your child is settled before your class or workout. Please see Kidz Club Guidelines here.

There are some school holidays coming up this month. This means Kidz Club can be busier than usual. Please plan ahead and make your reservations to ensure we are properly staffed for the safety of your child(ren).  Reservations can be made up to 1 week in advance or the same day. Call the number above.

There are a few days left to save on our Kidz Club Valentine Special: 20% OFF our 30-hour Kidz Club card ending Sunday, February 17th. Stock up now and plan your next workout with your partner for friend.

Please remember that only legal guardians are able to sign a child’s waiver and leave them in Kidz Club. Parents must remain on the Kennedy premises at all times while their child is at Kidz Club.

As we enter the cold and flu season please be reminded that if your child is too sick for school, they are too sick for Kidz Club. If your child has recently been sick, please make sure they are completely well before coming to Kidz Club. We want to maintain a healthy environment for all.

If your child has been to Kidz Club recently and then falls ill with anything that others can catch, PLEASE LET US KNOW.  When this happens we perform an extraordinary disinfecting effort immediately

to ensure no contagious germs are left behind. We are proud to keep our Kidz Club germ free.

Kids get hungry as they play, even if they have recently eaten. Please bring a healthy and non-sugary snack for your child. We do provide filtered water when the kiddos are thirsty but we do not offer snacks because of varying allergies or dietary restrictions. We are also a peanut free zone. When checking in your child, let us know of any special requirements or allergies.

AQUATICS and POOL Happenings: Nate, Aquatics Director (805) 781-3488

Attention Pool Enthusiasts: Please be prepared for the pool to close if there is a threat of thunder or lightning. Your safety is always our primary concern.

Here are some helpful guidelines to create satisfying pool time for all:

When choosing a lane, please choose lanes with people of similar speed and/or participating in the same activity.

If you are the sole swimmer in the lane, choose one side of the black line to swim for the entirety of your swim.

If another person enters, both swimmers can continue to swim on their respected sides of the black line.

If a lane already contains two swimmers, you now must circle swim.  When circle swimming, swim with the black line always on your left shoulder and continue swimming in a clockwise fashion.

Regardless of the number of swimmers in your lane, please always be considerate of your fellow swimmers and alert them of the method you choose to share.

Are you looking for an after school activity that offers both instruction and fun in the pool for your young athlete? A great next step beyond swim lessons, towards swim team or for children swimming for fitness, Stroke School is a non-competitive swim team that meets Monday-Friday . Swimmers must be able to complete 25m of freestyle with side breathing and 25m of backstroke. Schedule an assessment or find out more by calling the number above or emailing Nate at sloaquatics@kennedyclubs.com .

Take your workout to the water. You can aqua jog, walk, kick swim or take an aqua class. There is something for everyone and we always have lanes available. See Aqua Class times here.

Family swim is taking a break for Winter. It will resume later in the first quarter of 2019, weather permitting. Stay tuned to the Newsletter for updates.
